Abstract

During the Middle Ages the liturgical formula called "Commendatio animæ" was acted in church by all agonizing people. By means of this formula the believer invoked God’s mercy with the stereotyped words: "Lord, save my soul as you saved… [ followed by some biblical examples]". The same formula also appears in some literary texts written through the whole Middle Ages in all romance languages, from Occitan to Italian, from Spanish to French. The aim of this paper is to analyse the occurrences of the "Commendatio animæ" in some of these works, such as the Chanson de Roland or the Cantar de mio Cid. To this end, we assessed the awareness of the public on the liturgical sources of the "Commendatio", and the proper use of the formula by the poets. The results of this research show that both authors and audience had a great level of consciousness on the meaning of this formula and its liturgical background.
